Background of the Study:
Truancy is a pervasive issue that affects academic achievement and overall student development (Mahmud, 2023). In Gaya LGA, Kano State, high rates of absenteeism have raised concerns among educators, parents, and policy-makers. Truancy disrupts the learning process and contributes to long-term underperformance, often resulting in increased dropout rates. Factors such as socio-economic challenges, negative peer influence, and family dynamics are known to trigger chronic absenteeism (Salihu, 2024). Students who habitually skip classes struggle to keep pace with curriculum requirements, leading to significant gaps in their knowledge base and a decline in academic performance. Moreover, truancy is linked with disengagement from school activities and diminished interest in learning, further exacerbating its negative effects (Tijani, 2023). The lack of effective monitoring and intervention strategies, coupled with insufficient disciplinary measures and counseling services, has allowed truancy to persist unmitigated. Gaya LGA presents a diverse educational environment where both urban and rural schools encounter these issues, often compounded by limited parental involvement and inadequate community support. This study intends to examine the patterns of truancy and its correlation with academic achievement in secondary schools. By investigating the causes, effects, and potential remedial measures related to truancy, the research seeks to offer a comprehensive understanding of how absenteeism undermines academic success. The findings are expected to contribute to the development of targeted interventions to reduce truancy and improve educational outcomes (Umar, 2023).

Statement of the Problem:
Despite efforts to improve school attendance, truancy remains a critical challenge in secondary schools in Gaya LGA, Kano State. A significant problem is the lack of effective monitoring and intervention systems, with many schools reporting that truancy often goes undetected or unaddressed (Yusuf, 2024). Socio-economic pressures, negative peer influences, and insufficient parental involvement exacerbate the problem, leaving many students falling behind academically. Inconsistencies in disciplinary measures further complicate efforts to curb absenteeism, resulting in recurring episodes of truancy that undermine curriculum continuity and academic progress (Zainab, 2023). The absence of systematic support mechanisms has led to persistent knowledge gaps and declining academic performance. This study aims to investigate the direct impact of truancy on academic achievement and to identify the underlying causes contributing to high absenteeism rates. By understanding these factors, the research will propose strategies to mitigate truancy and improve educational outcomes (Ahmad, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To investigate the impact of truancy on academic achievement.
  2. To identify factors contributing to high truancy rates in Gaya LGA.
  3. To recommend effective intervention strategies to reduce truancy and improve academic performance.

Research Questions:

  1. How does truancy affect academic achievement in secondary schools in Gaya LGA?
  2. What are the key factors contributing to truancy among students?
  3. What interventions can be implemented to reduce truancy and enhance academic performance?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. There is a significant negative relationship between truancy and academic achievement.
  2. Socio-economic factors significantly contribute to high truancy rates in Gaya LGA.
  3. Targeted intervention strategies will reduce truancy and improve academic outcomes.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it sheds light on the adverse effects of truancy on academic achievement, offering a comprehensive analysis of its causes and consequences. The insights will assist educators and policy-makers in developing targeted interventions to reduce absenteeism, thereby fostering a more disciplined and engaging learning environment that promotes improved academic outcomes in Gaya LGA, Kano State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to secondary schools in Gaya LGA, Kano State and focuses exclusively on the effects of truancy on academic achievement. It does not encompass other factors affecting student performance.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Truancy: The habitual absence from school without a valid reason.
  2. Academic Achievement: The measurable success of students, typically indicated by grades.
  3. Secondary Schools: Educational institutions serving students typically aged 12–18.
